Also present stamp of provenance from an important private collection. Born in the Biella area and artistically trained at the Albertina Academy in Turin, Lorenzo Delleani initially devoted himself to the historicist subject, with an academic-romantic tone production. In the 1960s he began to approach the landscape and scenes of popular life, making his first works. From the 1960s on, his production took on a purely veristic tone. From some stays in Venice and from the study of the great Venetians of the previous centuries, Delleani acquired the chromatic vibrations and the warm luminosity that persistently appear in his production since the mid-1970s. Orientalist subjects also appeared in this period in his production, following the trend in vogue at that time, inspired above all by the production of Morelli. Small tables with easy landscapes, built with quick brushstrokes, which are flanked, however, also by larger size canvases acquire space in his activity; he gradually abandoned the historical subject to devote himself exclusively to the landscape with subjects that vary, from the surroundings of Oropa, to the Mucrone lake, to the Pollone Biellese meadows, to religious processions, to Ligurian views. Always active in the Italian artistic-cultural life, in particular in Turin, he was part of the promoting committee for the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art which was held in Turin in 1902, in which there was also Leonardo Bistolfi, his sincere friend and subsequently considered the greatest expert in his painting. The work presented here is a small landscape view, divided horizontally into two almost clear parts: the brown Piedmontese countryside in the foreground against the backdrop of the Alps, whitening to fade into the sky above, whose intense brightness almost dazzles and radiates light also on the clods and the underlying shrubs. The work is presented in a late 19th century frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Lorenzo Delleani (1840-1908)

Born in Pollone Biella in 1840, after an initial orientation towards music, Lorenzo Delleani discovered a passion for painting, which led him to enroll in the Accademia Albertina in Turin. The young artist earned his first critical acclaim with works of historical subjects, rather traditional in their formal structure, characterized by a decidedly academic-romantic general tone, organized according to scenographic cuts. In the meantime Delleani's interests moved towards landscape subjects and tended to leave the academic space. At the end of the sixth decade Delleani, widely inserted in the cultural life of Turin, became more and more interested in verismo intonation themes, flanking his production with in-depth studies "in the field"; in 1873, after a period spent painting around Turin, he also went to Venice, where he returned again in 1876, to assimilate the ways and inflections of painters such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, whose chromatic vibrations and warm luminosities appear with insistence on his mid-1970s production (mainly views, and costume scenes). Space in his activity is acquired by the small tables with easy-going landscapes, built with quick brushstrokes, but, at the same time, the historical themes remain, enriched also by explicitly oriental subjects. Another significant moment was, in 1883, the trip of Delleani to Holland. Fruitful was his production of tablets, but also of larger format canvases. Invited to the 1st Venice Biennale in 1895, he then participated in the event until 1907. Always active in Italian artistic and cultural life, in 1901 Delleani was part of the promoting committee for the international exhibition of modern decorative art which was held in Turin in 1902, which also included Leonardo Bistolfi, his sincere friend and later considered the expert on his painting. Delleani died in Turin in 1908.
