Bronze sculpture. Signature engraved on the base. Gino Masciarelli, a sculptor originally from Abruzzo but who lived in the Milan area, after having also worked at the Experimental Center for Scientific Research “F. Marinotti” in Lombardy, dealing with high-frequency cinematographic shooting, learned to capture the instability of bodies in movement and the dissolution of matter in space in many of his works. In the sculptures "Human groups" and "Flight" - to which the work presented here belongs -, the dynamism of flight can be observed almost as if it were a photographic sequence. The artist himself said: "Only 8 seconds made an impression on 300 meters of film, the aim was to slow down what the human eye cannot see, I wanted to capture the movement and the projection of these seconds lasted a couple of hours".

Additional Information

Artist: Gino Masciarelli (1940-2021)

Born in Chieti in 1940, Gino Masciarelli trained in his father's workshop and in 1961 graduated from the Art Institute of Chieti. He moved to Milan in 1965 to study at the Faculty of Architecture of the State University and at the Brera Academy. From 1969 to 1981 he taught artistic education in the middle schools of Ceriano Laghetto. In the 70s and 80s he alternated his artistic activity between Milan and Toronto. He worked in a European Experimental Research Center as a high-speed cinema operator. His interest in photographic and cinematographic experimentation leads him to capture the instability of bodies in movement and the dissolution of matter in space in Flights and Human Groups, works in which the dynamism of flight can be observed almost as if they were photographic sequences. Between 1965 and 1975 he created abstract sculptures made with materials recovered from industrial production waste, before moving on to metal sculptures. Gino Masciarelli's works are exhibited in museums, art galleries and public spaces in many large cities such as: Milan, Genoa, Rome, Lugano, Berlin, Geneva, New York and Toronto. Animator of cultural projects and initiatives, including the Bagutta Prize, in 2011 he founded the cultural association "In-flux" in Milan to support emerging talents. He is the author of the Unesco Award, the Golden Skate Awards for the World Ice Skating Championships, the flags of the Mediterranean Games, the Cross for Pope John Paul II. Masciarelli is also known to the general public for the 'Homage to the footballer' statue, symbol of the 1990 Italy World Cup exhibited at the Meazza stadium in Milan. The artist donated his plaster sculptures (1969-2009) to the Municipality of Solaro (Milan), creating the largest plaster cast gallery dedicated to a contemporary artist, now housed in the rooms of the Palazzo Borromeo in the city. The artist died in 2021.
